notification delivered to the European Council
By David at 06/10/2009 - 06:17

Mr. President,
Ladies and gentlemen,

We are emerging from a European election and it is each of our political parties to learn.
For my part, I want to distinguish the two.

The first is that the majority of voters who participated in this election has made in Europe and for Europe.
58% of our citizens say that their vote was not driven by issues of domestic politics, which is an encouraging sign for European democracy.

Those who have openly sought to use the ballot to punish us, have been punished.
Conversely, those who spoke of Europe, those who have made constructive proposals or alternatives have been rewarded.
This was particularly the case for Europe and ecology, whose breakthrough confirms the growing importance of environmental issues.

François Fillon's installation of the High Council speech
By David at 06/08/2009 - 05:25

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This installation of the High Council of the family reflects the importance the Government attaches to the family.

The date was fixed quickly and I know that this has cause problems for some of you but you understand that I wanted to meet you.

Our company is strong, inventive, but beset by doubts: on itself, its roots, its future. She is tormented by economic adjustment, social, ethical, and sometimes painful.

The crisis exacerbates these constraints.

Our institutions, our public services, our traditions are assets, but they must also evolve.

Education, justice, labor market, organization of our cities and territories, between individual autonomy and participation in a common destiny: on all these issues, our fellow citizens see that mutations are at work.

Central to all these questions, the family is key.

European Elections
By David at 06/08/2009 - 05:10

President Nicolas Sarkozy's centre-Right UMP group and the Greens were the two big winners in France's European parliamentary elections, exit polls suggested.

But the opposition Socialists appeared to have suffered serious losses -plunging the already weak party into further disarray.

With 28.3 per cent of the vote, according to a TNS-Sofrest Logica poll, UMP was set to become the first ruling party in France to come out on top in EU elections since 1979, in a major boost to Sarkozy, whose approval ratings have been poor in recent months.

Separate polls have suggested turnout was the lowest ever, with abstention at around 58 percent to 60 percent.

The death of Omar Bongo Ondimba
By David at 06/08/2009 - 04:26

The death of Omar Bongo Ondimba, according to a French government source, brings to an end one of France's closest relationships with an African leader, even if the murky ties had recently become frayed.

For more than 40 years, the leader of Gabon was considered an unflinching ally in west-central Africa for a string of French presidents, from Charles de Gaulle to Socialist Francois Mitterrand and recently, Nicolas Sarkozy.

"He was the keeper of half a century of secrets about the French presence in Africa," commented journalist and Africa hand Antoine Glaser in describing Bongo, who died Sunday in Spain, according to a French government source. There was no official announcement late Sunday of Bongo's death.

"Energy deals, mercenaries, secret operations.... From the 60s to the 90s, he served to further French influence in Africa. France's headquarters as the 'gendarme' of Africa was Libreville," said Glaser.

Air France Noticed A330 Sensor Problem Last Year, Notice it is 18 months after Airbus recommended that clients upgrade to a version less vulnerable to ice.

Press release N° 12

Update on anemometric sensors

Following the many questions which have appeared in the media on the issue of the Pitot probes in its fleet (the Pitot probe is an instrument which measures the air speed of the aircraft), Air France wishes to make the following clarifications:

1)   Malfunctions in the Pitot probes on the A 320 led the manufacturer to issue a recommendation in September 2007 to change the probes. This recommendation also applies to long-haul aircraft using the same probes and on which a very few incidents of a similar nature had occurred.

US Airways replaces sensor on Airbus A330 (the same plane as Air France 447)
By David at 06/08/2009 - 04:17

According to Bloomberg, US Airways, the smallest of the U.S. full-fare carriers, has begun replacing air-speed sensors on Airbus SAS A330s similar to equipment on an Air France jet that crashed off the coast of Brazil.

US Airways began changing out the sensors made by Thales SA “out of an abundance of caution” on the nine A330s it flies, Morgan Durrant, a spokesman, said today in an e-mail. Further details weren’t immediately available.

Unreliable data from sensors may have triggered a chain of events leading to the June 1 Air France crash that killed 228 people, France’s chief crash investigator said. Salvage teams have recovered 17 bodies from Air France Flight 447.

Airbus first recommended that airlines replace the speed sensors, known as Pitot tubes, on its Airbus 320, 340 and 330 models in September 2007.

Pakistan

What is your reaction to the release by the Pakistani courts of the leader of a group accused of being linked to the attacks in Bombay?

While having noted that this is a legal decision, France is carefully monitoring the developments associated with the inquiry on the attacks that took place in Bombay from November 26 to 29, 2008.

It believes that the firm commitment of the Pakistani authorities is absolutely vital in order to make further progress in the inquiry and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.

12 airplanes shared the sky with Air France Flight 447, but none reported problems
By David at 06/07/2009 - 06:08

According to CNN -- At least 12 airplanes shared the trans-Atlantic sky with doomed Air France Flight 447, but none reported any problems, deepening the mystery surrounding the cause of the plane's disappearance. Airlines confirmed that at least a dozen aircraft departed roughly at the same time and traversed approximately the same route, but did not report problematic weather conditions. This has led some aviation experts to suggest that technical problems on the airplane might be the main cause of the crash, though they may have combined with weather conditions to create serious problems.

Dalai Lama is in France
By David at 06/07/2009 - 06:06

Despite Beijing’s objection, according to AFP, the Dalai Lama is in France to be named an honorary citizen of Paris. He has insisted it is not political even though China has lashed out at the European countries that have received the 73-year-old Buddhist leader this week.

France and China have only just patched up relations following Beijing's anger over President Nicolas Sarkozy's meeting with the Dalai Lama in December and Beijing has already voiced its opposition to this trip.

US will help Air France 447 Investigation
By David at 06/07/2009 - 05:58

President Barack Obama says the United States has authorized all of the government's resources to investigate an Air France plane that disappeared off the coast of South America.

The U.S. Navy is sending two high-tech devices to French ships that will help them locate the black boxes, a senior U.S. defense official told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The Towed Pinger Locators, which can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), are being flown to Brazil on Monday with a U.S. Navy team, said the official, who requested anonymity because the decision, which came in response to a request from France, has not been announced.

The team will deliver the locators to two French tugs that will use them to listen for transmissions from the black box, the official said.

Couple of new items:

1. The bodies of two male passengers were recovered Saturday morning about 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of where Air France Flight 447 emitted its last signals — roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

Brazilian air force spokesman Col. Jorge Amaral said an Air France ticket was found inside a leather briefcase.

"It was confirmed with Air France that the ticket number corresponds to a passenger on the flight," he said.
