Britain now a nation of chefs who cook more than the French
The BBC Olive magazine collaboration with French title Madame Figaro surveyed 2,061 readers of BBC Magazines and 1,345 Madame Figaro readers in January.
The following results:
- Britain spent more time than French and cook a wider range of cuisine. (And when in the kitchen, 50% of Britons spend more than 30 minutes cooking, while 27% of the French do so)
- The French prefer dining out and sticking to home-grown family recipes (72% of Britons cook at home every day, compared to 59% in France.)
- People in France tend to produce more, with 47% preparing two courses or more compared with 18% of Britons.
- The French eat out on average three times a month compared to twice a month in Britain.
- 93% of Britons and 87% of French said they cooked Italian food; 76% of Britons and 40% of French cooked Chinese; 76% of Britons and 31% of French cooked Indian; and 62% of Britons and 55% of French cooked Spanish.
- The French cooked more Moroccan food than the British, with 49% to 43% ever preparing such dishes.
- While Italian was the favorite foreign food for both countries, just one% of French respondents said British cuisine was their favorite.
- Olive readers thought that 1970s favorite crepe suzette was the dish which best symbolized French cuisine, while the French said it was veal, followed by foie gras.
- Madame Figaro voters reckoned Christmas pudding best symbolized British cuisine. British readers said it was a roast dinner with Yorkshire pudding, followed by fish and chips then a full English breakfast.
